My 2010 GOTY Awards

After watching many Game of the Year awards, I feel I should let everyone know just how wrong they are.  They just do not get it.  So here they are.  Keep in mind that I have excluded certain awards like best sports game and best console specific awards, because they are pointless.

Best Racing: Gran Turismo 5

GT5 is car culture in virtual form.  It is the definition of the driving experience.  No other game comes close to really perfecting the feel of a car and everything related to it.  The sheer amount of content in this game is astounding, there really is something here for everyone who likes to drive fast.

Best Handheld: God of War: Ghost of Sparta

The PSP may not have a huge catalog of games but when God of War came to the PSP in Chains of Olympus.  It was on par with its big brother on the PS3.  Action is God of War's specialty and no other game comes close to being so epic on such a small system.

Best Strategy: Starcraft 2:Wings of Liberty

It's about time this game come out.  While blizzard has been known for taking a while to develop their games, they have always been worth the wait.  And it is no exception here.  The campaign mode offered many fun and new experiences that I had never thought possible in a strategy game.

Best Action/Adventure: God of War 3

Again, God of War is epic.  What made it so good was the fact that everything was completely over the top.  Kratos never does just the minimum requirements.  This pulse-pounding game featured the biggest set-pieces ever and some of the most memorable kills.  God of War 3 continues to define the term epic adventure.

Best RPG: Mass Effect 2

The first one was good yes, but the sequel took out the bad things and magnified the good things.  The lame moon-like rover sequences are gone while the action has been turned up.  All while still being a compelling RPG with a great story.

Best Graphics: God of War 3

Graphics are another things God of War has been known for.  This outing on the PS3 has not been disappointing, the gameplay resembles CG and the gore is top-notch.  I am sure we have all seen the video of Kratos ripping Helios's head off, and while I have never seen such a sight, it feels like I already have.

Best Game That is Really a Movie:  Heavy Rain

Some would call it interactive media, but whatever it is, it's good.  Apart from Uncharted 2, never before has a game come so close to blurring the lines between film and video game.  The story is great and the characters are believable.  You just want to keep watching, I mean playing.

Game of the Year: God of War 3

While not as movie like as Heavy Rain, God of War 3 was still very cinematic.  With monstrous Titan battles and huge backgrounds, this game is certainly quite large.  It is why I play video games, to do something I could never do myself and to see something truly amazing.  God of War is why video games exist, to let off steam after a long day.  While many other games have their flaws, this one has none.  The combat and visuals have been perfected and the action is still, the best in the industry.
